The Idaho Vandals pride themselves on having an efficient offense and one of the ways that achieve that is by taking all of the yards that the defense is willing to give them.
That’s why today we’re going to talk about a simple tag that Coach Luke Schleusner added to one of Idaho’s core run schemes that helped them raise their completion percentage and even set the single game completion percentage record at Idaho!

Idaho’s Mid Zone RPO Tag
The Mid Zone is a simple run scheme that Idaho has used since the beginning of Coach Schleusner’s tenure which allows them to stretch the defense horizontally instead of vertically and gives Idaho a lot of advantages upfront.
To make their core run scheme even more deadly, the Vandals have added a simple arrow RPO tag to their concept which allows them to take the free yards left on the table by the defense when they aggressively play the run.
The play is blocked the same up front which keeps the install cheap for the offensive line, and the read is simple for the QB as well as he keys the end away from the play.
Because this isn’t a naked and is an RPO, the offense knows that they need to catch the ball on or behind the LOS.
At the snap, the QB will give the mesh to the RB and read the End. If the QB gets a pull read, he will take ball out and is given the cue “1-2-3 throw” to time the delivery of the football.
This play is incredibly simple, but Idaho is able to run it over and over again by changing personnel groups and making formational adjustments.
Advanced coaching tip: When running this concept against a cover 0 blitz, the #2 receiver will push crack on the man defender of the RPO player.
