Mount Union’s Eye Front

Above is a picture of Mount Union’s base defensive front, the “eye front.

This versatile defensive front has three down linemen and is set to the field with two 4is and a 0 tech lined up on the center. 

The two 4is are comprised of Mount Union’s Tackle and Penny positions. The Tackle always aligns weak and the Penny aligns strong.

The Nose’s primary job in this front is to attack the center and get him on his heels to prevent a free release off of the LOS.

This frequently forces the offense to double team the Nose, and if they can’t get off of him they have nowhere to go.

What the role of the Nose in this front does is free up the LBs to play the ball and plug up the fit.

For obvious reasons, Mount Union prefers large and powerful Nose Tackles in their scheme with athletic LBs that can fly to the ball and be the play makers of the defense from the second level!
