How to Communicate Plays Using Boards

Being able to get to the line incredibly fast is one of the things that a great no huddle offense does best!

One tool that some of the best programs that use this system implement is the use of visual boards to quickly communicate calls with their players! This takes the concept of “one-word” calls and gets them out even faster to your players on the field.

That’s why today we’re going to talk about exactly how to use this tool and get the most out of it!

The No Huddle Board System Procedure

In order to implement this, you will have two different guys handling board signals, staying about 15 yards behind the offense. One man will be responsible for both of the “LIVE” boards, and the other will be holding a board that is completely fake. Staying 15 yards behind the offense allows you to give a good angle for all of your players on the field, and it’s usually enough of a distance to stay off of any broadcasts or livestreams so that your signals are not shown.

The “LIVE” boards will be double sided, with one side being live calls and the other side being dummy calls. These two live boards will use pictures on both sides, and the completely fake board will have numbers in large font on both sides.

We will then tell our players which square will be live (for example, the bottom left) which means they can ignore the other 3 players.

Each board will have 4 spots, and each picture and number will be at an angle so that it will not be clear exactly which square is live. We use numbers on the fake board so that it is clear and obvious to the receivers on the far side of the field which board is the fake one.

We also give the “LIVE” boards a dummy side so that both board holders will always be holding up a board, even if we are only using hand signals.

The two board holders should work together to stay directly behind our signaler at all times, especially during home games when the coaches and film crew for both teams are directly behind the sideline and may be to see the signals.

Using the boards for communication and as an extra shield for our hand signals allows for the maximum amount of security for on-field communications.

Above is an example of some of the signals that we’ve use to indicate to our players that the board is a dummy signal.

If our players look up and see this board, they should immediately look to the signal caller on the sideline for the real call.

The reasons for the dummy calls on the board should make sense to your players, and whatever symbols or pictures you put on the board should be easy to recognize from the far side of the field.

This is just a small part of the No Huddle Offense board procedure!

In The Complete No Huddle Playbook we go into even more detail about how to build the boards, the exact sizes we use (it’s probably smaller than you think) and how to reuse the boards for a different picture without having to print giant new graphics each week and spending lots of money.
