Swinging Gate Side Snap & Lateral

The offensive line starts out in what looks like a normal alignment, but before the snap, the entire line moves to the right, and the man who starts at center is now over the ball, having originally lined up at left tackle.

An added bonus of running different O-Line shifts is that you can create some opportunities for a side-snap like in a swinging gate play. The Rockets have four players lined up to one side here, and since the center is on the end of the O-Line, he can either snap it to the QB or side snap it here.

In this example the side snap goes to the RB who takes it and laterals to the QB running wide around the corner who runs into the end zone for the score. The initial side snap sucks in the defense and there’s no one left on the edge for the lateral.

This is a great wrinkle if you’ve already run some kind of swinging gate play in the past, and the defense is likely to collapse on the first runner with the football.
