It doesn’t matter what offense you run, you need a plan for the defense, and not just on game day.
The most successful coaches all have a process they use to analyze defenses and figure out the best way to attack, and they use that system each and every week during the season to save time.
Today we’re going to talk about how Coach David Weathersby builds a game plan in the Wing-T offense, and how the staff analyzes their opponent.
This is taken directly from our latest release: The Complete Wing-T Playbook
How to Game Plan for a Defense
Coach Weathersby and his staff take a straightforward approach to game planning, and it all starts with the players at the different levels of the defense.
On the first level, who is their best and worst players and how do the play? Are they penetrators, slanters, or readers? What about an attached Tight End? How do they play it? And of course, are they primarily in an odd or even front?
Next comes the second level analysis. Who are their best and worst players? Do the linebackers crossread, or are they reading the guards? How do they handle motion and different formation adjustments? Who is their backside cutback reverse player?
And then we get to the secondary. Who is the best and worst DB? Since they will usually line up with only one tight end and one receiver, who is the hard corner who will come down and play the hard edge? How do they adjust to formations and motions? And then obviously what coverage will they play (Most defenses will play them in a version of Cover 3 or Man).
Once Coach Weathersby and his staff have all this information, they start to build their game plan and the play sheet you see above.
