The Play

Urban Meyer’s Utah team was undefeated, and up 28-7 late in the 3rd quarter over a good Pitt team. The Utes hadn’t really been able to put away the Panthers, but this play really put the final nail in the coffin and secured a perfect season for Urban Meyer before he left for Florida.

One of the plays that was really becoming trendy in the early-to-mid 2000’s was the alley screen. Offensive play callers had fallen in love with getting their best playmakers isolated in space, and finding ways to get a convoy of blockers in front of them.

This was a play that Urban Meyer had called many times during the season, so Pitt was well-prepared for it.

Illustration or diagram depicting the play with the alley screen and lateral. The QB carries out a zone read fake and finds the X receiver on his screen path. The X receiver catches the ball and laterals to the F coming around from the other side in orbit motion. The defense collapses on the threat in front of them, leaving room for the lateral and giving up another score.

The QB Alex Smith carries out a zone read fake and then finds the X receiver on his screen path. Once he catches the ball, the X receiver takes a step and laterals to the F coming around from the other side in orbit motion.

The defense was so ready for the alley screen, they collapsed on the threat right in front of them, leaving room for the lateral and giving up another score.

This is just one example of the collection of plays I’m putting together to be released in the next couple of weeks.
