The way you space your offensive formation has a massive effect on how the defense will be able to align themselves pre-snap.
Today we’re going to talk about one way that FSU uses condensed formations to create more grass around their playmakers to help them make explosive plays!
Condensed formations and other formational wrinkles are discussed more in our newest release: 101 Plays from the FSU Offense
2×2 Compressed Spot Concept
On this play, HC Mike Norvell calls for a quick game concept to get the ball out of his QB’s hands fast.
While this might seem complex based off of the formation, this is a standard spot concept from condensed splits, but it gives the defense an entirely different look.
While this is a quick game concept, it will still take some time for the QB to reach the boundary through his progressions.
This will be difficult because the defense is bringing pressure that will cause the QB to hurry up his progression.
The defense is bringing 6, but it’s not evident pre-snap because the formation is so tight.
Since the RB is free-releasing, there will only be 5 in the protection so it will only take 1 extra rusher for the QB to be hot.
The offensive line is sliding to the field so the WLB coming off the edge from the boundary will force the QB to get rid of the ball quickly.
Since the WLB blitzed, the MLB is now responsible for getting all the way to the RB to the boundary which is a MAJOR mismatch. This play results in a huge gain for the Noles and puts them close to midfield.
