Hey Coach,

The ability for a QB to extend a play is essential for an offense to succeed off-script.

Today we’re going to talk about a drill that helps QBs get better at avoiding rushers in the pocket.

This topic is discussed in our latest release: The Complete QB Drills Bundle

The Bag Dodge Drill

This drill begins with the QB taking a drop of the coach’s choice (3 or 5 step).

Once the QB has planted his foot on the final step of his drop, one of the coaches who are standing to either side of the QB will throw a bag at the QB.

The QB’s job is to push off of the foot nearest to the incoming bag, and propel himself upward and in the opposite direction where he will step up and resettle his feet.

The QB pushes off the foot nearest to the incoming bag, propels himself upward and in the opposite direction, then steps up and resettles his feet. Finally, the QB throws to the receiver on that side.

Once the QB has re-established himself, he will throw to the receiver who is to that side.

It’s best to use a coach to throw the bag to ensure the drill stays controlled and your QB stays safe.
